To begin the lesson, participants draw a caveperson (who is the only person on earth) and determine how they will provide for the caveperson’s most basic needs for survival. The caveperson is referred to throughout the lesson as participants learn the benefits of being a part of a community and how social capital can provide many financial and non-financial benefits. To conclude the lesson, participants try to live one month on a limited income by playing the online game SPENT. To show appreciation for the support they receive from social capital, participants write a thank you note to a person or organization that has provided them with some form of support.
